The Potential Causes of an Abscessed Tooth
A lot of different issues can lead to an abscessed tooth. The problem typically begins with poor dental hygiene. Damage to your tooth, including an untreated cavity or signs of gum disease and tooth decay, can increase the risk of infection.

With a cavity, the inside of your tooth is vulnerable to infection and the growth of bacteria. This bacteria can spread to the tissue around your tooth, which results in an abscess. With gum disease, a similar situation can occur. Gum disease can cause your gums to pull away from teeth, which leaves a pocket where bacteria can spread.
