There are still a few businesses out there doing it the right way, but that mentality seems to be fading quickly. As companies search for ways to increase profit margins, why is customer service always the first to go? I know in my experience, I've made purchases just because the person assisting me was so helpful and courteous and it felt good to support that. Of course i had intentions of buying the item eventually, but you get the idea.
In the summer of 2014, I was blessed with the opportunity to start The Great Heron for people like me that value great products and service. After being laid off, the far off idea of starting our own business instantly became not so far off. Although, it has been a blessing, it didn't really feel like it at the time. My wife and I were still in our "newly wed" stage of marriage and faced with our first "life" obstacle. I waited for her to come home that day, which was the first time that had happened in a while, and broke the bad news to her. First, I had to wait for her to tell me all about her day. Once she finished, a few hours later;) we talked about everything. Sure, we had often talked about starting our own business, but that was later on down the road. You know, like when we were "prepared" for it. We talked and weighed all of the options. To be honest, I poured everything I had into the company I was with before and felt like I had nothing left. I thought I'd just find a 9-5 somewhere and be one of those people that came in and checked out at the end of the day. My wife knew me better than that and insisted that kind of life wasn't for me. That night, The Great Heron was born and I'm thankful every day for her helping me see where I need to be.
