Despite its rural setting and idyllic name, much of Newyears Green is literally a dump. There is a recycling centre, waste transfer station and car breaker’s yard. Not content with these facilities, fly dumpers deposit their loads in every available spot – usually right in front of the council’s ‘no tipping’ signs. One can also find here the Dews Farm Sandpits, near Harvil Road, which are managed by the London Wildlife Trust. Woodland and scrub are common here around varied grassland rich with flowers and insects. Looked up in Rocque’s map of Middlesex which dates from in 1754, here is shows a small group of dwellings. The dog-leg bend in Newyears Green Lane marks the point where the road used to fork off across Harefield Lane (currently Breakspear Road) to Ickenham but this route was closed after the enclosure of the fields in 1813.
