Spartan Work Out (CBS4)
MIAMI If you have seen the movie "300", you can't miss the bodies on
the actors. Despite some obvious computer touch-ups, they are fit, hot
and healthy. Now, you can have the body of a spartan warrior thanks to
a new South Florida workout.
The new gladiator movie, "300" has
earned some die-hard fans in South Florida, but not for the incredible
action scenes and cinematography, but for the incredibly chiseled
physiques the actors displayed.
Most guys around town have admitted the movie has inspired them to get off their couches get into shape.
"Everybody
in my fraternity is talking about it," said Eric Karker. "Oh man, look
at those guys. Everyone's going to the gym now."
But the hard
bodies you saw on screen just don't grow on trees. The actors in the
movie performed a special training program that you won't find at your
local gym.
It's dirty, it's brutal, but if it's done right, it gets results. It's known as "Spartan Training."
"It's
a drawback to training the way the body was trained many thousands of
years ago. Working with gravity, working with momentum, working with
dead mass, working with your own body," said J.C. Santana from the
Institute of Human Performance. "Spartan Training was based on
sacrifice. You had to be able to sacrifice your body to be ready for
war."
The new workout phenomenon is not relegated to Hollywood
actors. Athletes have also discovered the benefits of the Spartan
workout.
"You're working your whole body all at once," said champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Pablo Popovitch. "It's pretty amazing."
