How You can be Sucessful Caring for a Loved One at Home

How we perceive the world and the people around us has a great deal to do with how we perceive ourselves, and what we see as our place in the world. Perception comes from life experience and how we perceive the information our physical senses and emotions sends to us. We all have intuitive instincts and basic human needs. Over the course of our own unique journeys we learn how to relate to and meet our own basic needs. We know what makes us feel better and how we like things to be done. We definitely develop our opinion about the world and ourselves. Wisdom comes from acknowledging that perception is an individualized concept, everyone has his or her own unique perception. I have been a caregiver for twenty years which lead to my discovery of the great caregiver illusion. The great caregiver illusion is that caregivers think that based on their own perception they know what is best for another human being. First one must understand that it is impossible to know another person’s heart. Second we all see things just a bit differently and respond to things in different manners. Unconditional love and caring for another human being can only be done comfortably and successfully if you understand that you must respect that person’s individually and their perspectives. You must meet their needs on their terms. Listen carefully, see with your heart, and touch with healing love and gentleness. Your greatest accomplishment will be putting your needs and desires aside, so you can understand someone else’s needs and desires. I continue to learn a valuable life’s lesson everyday. I’m always amazed how sorrow and pain can bring such wonderful gifts as wisdom patience, insight and love. I believe rewards of the heart are the fuel that keeps caregiver’s lights burning bright, steady and strong.
