At least in the UK. A web hosting firm called Hostway conducted a survey of 1500 of it's consumers... and the results were not good. The firm reported that over 33% of respondents were frustrated by slow loading and unavailable web pages. Another 25% said they did not use mobile and PDA devices because of difficulty navigating web pages. Unfortunately, no statistics were provided regarding the use of laptops/notebooks. But from the sound of it, it's too slow.
