Consumer advocates offer the following tips for avoiding burdensome credit card debt:
Set yourself up in a lifestyle you can afford, so you spend less than you earn and can build up a cushion of savings to use in an emergency.
Before buying a product or a service with a credit card, ask yourself whether you can pay it off in full at the end of that month, or at least in the near future.
If you have a card with a high interest rate, don't use it for big purchases.
Try as much as possible to pay off balances in full.
If you're getting too far into debt, seek help early from a reputable consumer counseling agency.
