10th July 2007
The most popular destination for property investors over the age of 50 who are looking to retire abroad is Spain, it has been revealed.
Research by Saga - which specialises in the provision of services to people over the age of 50 - shows that those considering retirement overseas are most likely to do so in Spain, followed by France, Portugal and Cyprus.
In all, ten per cent of those polled admitted they were thinking about retiring abroad, while 15 per cent said that buying a property abroad to facilitate this development was an option.
According to a Saga spokesperson, the main reasons for this are climate, the cost of living and increased accessibility.
"In a recent Saga survey, ten per cent of people said they were considering retiring abroad," the spokesperson confirmed.
"Feedback from our customers shows that this is down to a number of things such as climate, cost of living and ease of access due to the range of cheap flights available."
"Our figures regarding destinations are concerning those buying holiday homes rather than retiring.
"However, about fifteen per cent of those buying a holiday home do say they are looking to buy for retirement. In this sense, the most popular country is Spain, followed by France, Portugal and Cyprus."
