Dee Why
Dee Why was named in 1814 by James Meehan. Dee Why and Long Reef Beaches form a continuous 2km long bay on the southern side of Long Reef point.
Dee Why is situated in the heart of the Northern Beaches, has excellent beaches and a rock pool. Only minutes from the world famous Manly Beach, Dee Why has many attractions from stylish beach Cafes to over 200 specialist shops.
Narrabeen
At Narrabeen you can basically do any water activity, including windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, fishing, boating and swimming. Narrabeen is surrounded by numerous parks and reserves, and has numerous walking tracks.
The area has some fine restaurants and cafes and a friendly shopping area. There is a monthly Saturday morning market with numerous stalls and the markets are located right on the waters edge of Narrabeen Lake.
Warriewood
Warriewood lies between Mona Vale to the north, Ingleside to the west and North Narrabeen to the south and extends east to the ocean at Warriewood Beach.
Mona Vale
There are many leisure activities at Mona Vale such as golf, tennis, surfing and fishing. There are fine dining restaurants and shopping areas. Mona Vale has rock baths that are set in the rock platform separating Mona Vale beach to the south and Basin beach to the north.
Newport
The area came to be called Newport from about 1880. Newport is situated between Bungan Beach to the South and Bilgola Plateau to the North. On the east is the Tasman Sea and on the west side is Pittwater, it's waterways providing access to most water sports, from yachting to scuba diving and surfing, and wind surfing.
Bilgola
Bilgola is an Aboriginal word thought to mean swirling waters. Bilgola Plateau crowns the peninsula rising from the ocean beach to 169 metres. Bilgola lies between Newport to the south and Avalon and Clareville to the north.
Avalon
Avalon is east of Clareville, situated between Whale beach to the north and Bilgola to the south. Avalon is home to the few remaining koalas able to survive in an increasingly urban environment, a reminder that there once were many more in Pittwater.
Avalon Beach is superb for swimming, surfing windsurfing and fishing. A rock swimming pool is located at the southern end of the beach. A shady park area provides refuge from the summer sun, together with picnic and barbeque facilities.
Whale Beach
The origin of the name Whale Beach is unknown, although it is presumed to be associated either with the shape of the northern headland, or a beaching of a whale. Whale Beach faces east to the ocean, with Palm Beach to the north and Avalon to the south. From the 1950s, the area became a residential suburb.
Palm Beach
Palm Beach was named after the Cabbage Tree palms Livistona australis.
Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club established in 1921. The area has become more residential but still remains a secluded peninsula at the northern point of Pittwater.
Palm Beach, is also where the TV Show Home and Away is filmed, better known to audiences as Summer Bay.
